Why You Should Get Multiple Quotes For Your Renovation

Renovations are never an impulse purchase. People do not wake up on a Saturday morning and say, “I think I’m going to buy a new bathroom today.”

So it’s very important to do as much homework as possible before venturing into a renovation. A lot of our clients will investigate products and practices well in advance of meeting with us and we are a strong advocate for this practice.

In most instances, our clients have also received more than one quote for their proposed project and this is a very smart move for 3 reasons:

  1. You will get a realistic understanding of the market cost for your renovation.

  2. You will find a contractor who is a better fit for you and your project.

  3. You will be more confident in your choice because you did your homework before going forward.

Good contractors have a clear, transparent quoting and billing process. The price of a renovation is set by the work to be done and the products to be used, it should not change based on who the client is or their perceived budget.

It can be adjusted based on a client’s actual budged through communication and collaboration.

While it may be awkward, it’s important to be open about your budget for your project with your contractor so that realistic expectations can be discussed.

A good contractor will help guide you through the renovation process, suggest a variety of options and recommend what fits your needs from a practical standpoint, a design standpoint and a budgetary standpoint.

Whether it’s a kitchen, bathroom, basement or something bigger like an addition or a whole house renovation, it’s important to keep the long-term picture in play both for the end product of the renovation but the financial impact it will have as well.

Good contractors do not sell clients on projects or products. Contractors do recommend the best practices and products for their client’s project goals.

Different projects have different goals. Basement renovations are typically done to expand the living space of young families. Bathroom renovations can be to accommodate an aging parent’s accessibility needs. Or a main floor/kitchen renovation can be to take your 1980s living area into the modern era.

It’s important as a client, that you feel your contractor is an expert renovation consultant who is advising you in the best way possible to achieve the goals and needs of your project.

By meeting with more than one contractor and getting multiple quotes, it should help you in feeling more confident that you’ve chosen the right person for your project to be a success.

We hope this helps you understand why we at Speed River Contracting think it’s important to get multiple quotes for your project and to be open about your budget and project goals.
